  • Sea Trip Sat 14th October - Arduanie

An island ticking and future campsite hunting sortie..
Plugging SW out of Arduanie, into the F2-3, which XC claimed as F4-5, our first destination was Eilean Creagach. A brief survey from the water dismissed the camping potential, and we turned before the wind, and surfed our way to Eilean Gamhna for coffee stop No1. Coffee was enlivened by views of porpoises & a pair of white-tailed eagles enjoying the rising wind (which XC claimed was dropping). Definite camping potential was the verdict, and we continued on our way northwards, calling in a Degnish Point to prospect more potential campsites. Working our way up the now rocky coast, towards Ardmaddy, with a distinct dearth of landing opportunities, we had a close inspection call from a juvenile white-tail. Approaching Ardmaddy bay, the allegedly dying wind decided to pick up to F5, and add driving rain to the mix. A handy rocky beach with sheltering stone wall, persuaded us that it was lunchtime. Little used storm cags were extracted from hatches, and the prospect of a long slog home contemplated....

Recollecting it's obligations, the wind suddenly dropped to a virtual calm. Out of our cosy cage, and back on the water, we pottered on up the loch to Rubha nan Ron, where our arrival coincided with the start of the stream running south. So, turning into the wind, which had, naturally forgotten it's duty & increased again, we started a gentle slog south, maintaining a steady 3kn down the outside of Torsa, thanks to the boost of all the water flowing out of the Cuan. Last stop, and island tick, of the day, was Scoul Eilean, and it's perfect little harbour. A sharp turn east away from a dying wind, and a last short leg saw us back at Arduanie. It was only 16:30, but there was a definite darkening of the day evident - and a feeling of the season changing.

Thanks to Richard, Pete and Lucy for their company, and enthusiasm!
